“Boom Chicago has a new show: Amsterdama, about finding a home in Amsterdam. In a world full of greedy landlords, 9m2 studios, and “co-living spaces” that are just adult bunk beds, the search for a home has become the ultimate blood sport. The show is completely in English. Do you want to go?” I asked a friend, who is originally from South Hampton. “I have to work next day, but I firmly believe that if you have an opportunity to go to a party you definitely need to do so!’’ he replied. If you wonder if it was worth our while, I can tell you it sure is!
When you walk in the small theatre at the Rozengracht 117 in Amsterdam, sit down in front of the stage with your drink on a small table beside you, you feel as if you walk into somebody’s living room. A perfect setting for crazy scenes about house warming parties. The Boom Chicago crew gives you a highly energetic performance, with some songs reheased to perfection for example a sing a long about a ferry in Amsterdam Noord, which makes you feel ‘’Yes, I recognise this experience going on a crowded ferry each day! and others completely improvised like a rap battle about celebrities. And other song improvised at the spot. The fun thing is that as a member of the audience you can provide imput for the show or decide whether a scene should go on, or change completely. Never a dull moment! Your imput doesn’t have to be about Amsterdam, it can be about any major city or small town in a housing crisis and life’s milestones, or about setbacks and absurd detours for example about divorce or the craziest things like the mating of birds…
Ofcourse no chef can cook to everyone’s taste. So for whom is this show definitely a ‘no, no’? For those who cannot handle people sitting next to them laughing out loud, sitting in a full spotlight some times and being asked by a performer what you want to scene to be about, followed up by loud music and ‘neighbours’ complaining about it. But even people with autism will enjoy that, if you bring your earplugs and put them on every now and then, and unwind in the break with a stiff drink. I know for sure I did. The two hours show is as chaotic, quick phased and absurd as the modern life it comments upon. So fasten your seatbelts for Boom Chicago!
Meg Buzza, Simon Lukacs, Deshawn Mason, Laura Maynard, Katie Nixon, Brad Kemp, and Emil Struijker Boudier will give you a great show on Thursdays and Saturdays from 20.00.
